Looks like I’m heading back to the classroom for six months in a few weeks, and I was wondering if people had any laptop recommendations. Really, the only thing I want is eight gigs of RAM in order to be futureproof and for it to be less than $1000 CAD, as it’ll mainly be for taking notes, Skype, and web browsing. Battery life longer than 2.5 hours would be nice (thanks for giving an ultrabook garbage battery life, Lenovo!) Any recommendations? I’m thinking about an HP x360 with Ryzen, but I’ve seen a few negative reviews with graphics drivers.

FWIW, I just bought an Asus C302 chromebook and it’s pretty fantastic for the kinds of things you’re talking about. It clearly doesn’t have all the capabilities of a full laptop but it’s fast, light, and simple. And I got on sale for $500. Great battery life too.

It’s also a touchscreen, flips into a sort of tablet, and has a nice feeling backlit keyboard.

I read a lot of reviews before buying one, it consistently came to the top of many lists. Mine has the M5 processor.

Anyway, that’s my 2 cents.

I’m heavily considering a Chromebook, but I’m still on the fence about it. I’ll try one in a store on the weekend.

My Thinkpad X1 Carbon has been super solid. I know the carbon is pretty pricy, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about the T series. r/thinkpad on reddit would be a good place to get some advice.

Eh, not a big fan of Lenovo products since my current laptop isn’t great. Granted, it’s an Ideapad and not a Thinkpad, but still.

For school and light duties it’s hard to say no to a Surface. My wife gets 9 hours of battery life out of hers and it handles everything she needs it to vis a vis college life

I’m about halfway through my own year long return into the classroom, and very happy with the Lenovo Yoga 720. There’s a small crowd of laptops with active digitizers and styluses around that price point, and I’ve found it great for note taking. Especially as some profs are fussy about laptops in the class (people end up on facewhatsapptagram), but will usually tolerate something in tablet mode.

I recommend checking out Microsoft Store’s “Signature Edition” laptops. “Signature Edition” is their way of saying “Just Windows, zero bloatware”. Stick with the name brands - MSI, Dell (which I bought last year and am very happy with, one of the Inspirons with the A12 and 12GB of RAM), Lenovo, HP’s upper-end stuff, Razer (if it’s in your price range, e.g. Refurbished), ASUS, and even nicer Acers are all pretty solid. Chromebooks are overpriced for what you get nowadays.

I’d love a Surface, but they’re a little expensive for what you get in my opinion.

I grabbed a Flex 5 14" for nearly half price during Microsoft’s 12 days of deals and I love the thing. But if I didn’t lust for the hinge or the active pen:

There’s a massive difference in quality between Thinkpads and the rest of Lenovo’s lineup. They’re worth a look.

My last two laptops have been ThinkPads (X120e, now Yoga 260), both solid machines. I bought an off-lease X1 Carbon 1st Gen for my dad, 5-years old but it’s rock solid as well.

Duuuude, that’s sweet. Thank you!

Any input on the Thinkpad 13?

It’s a lower end small business model, but should fit your needs. Basically Lenovo’s Dell Vostro, below Latitude. This year it’s getting renamed the L380 when it moves to Kaby Lake.

T/X > L > E > V-series not sold here >>>>>>>>>> Ideapad

One thing to mind you about that site is most of the ThinkPads are made to order, so it may take some time to ship.
